Escambia deputies provide drone overwatch on SWAT arrest
When Escambia County Sheriff’s Office SWAT prepared to serve a high-risk warrant for a homicide suspect, deputies deployed a Drone as First Responder (DFR) unit to provide aerial overwatch.
As the team positioned on the ground, the drone operator identified the suspect attempting to flee the area before the warrant was served. From above, the drone tracked the suspect’s movement in real time, relaying precise location data to ground units.
Because of that early detection, SWAT was able to move quickly and safely, taking the suspect into custody before he could escape into nearby inaccessible terrain. The coordinated effort prevented a dangerous pursuit and ensured that no one—officers or suspect—was injured.
This incident demonstrates how Escambia County’s DFR program enhances situational awareness, tactical planning, and officer safety during complex operations. By giving deputies critical information before engagement, the drone team turned a potentially volatile encounter into a controlled, injury-free arrest.
- US Marshals and along with our warrants unit and our SWAT team,
- um, had developed a location where they had a
- homicide suspect.
- Typically, they would go there, they would try to surround the house
- and serve it.
- We had been asked by our SWAT team commander, "Hey,
- let's start using you guys for
- overwatch." And that was one of the first times
- that we had actually, you know,
- utilized the drone in that capacity.
- Literally, all we do is we go up, we fly over the house, so we're able
- to capture running people, fleeing suspects, or, you know,
- any of that kind of
- thing. Plus the eyes in the sky constantly giving
- those units on the ground
- real-time information. We were monitoring overwatch.
- They had pulled our BearCat up into the front.
- They started making announcements as they were exiting and trying to surround the
- house when the homicide suspect actually fled out the
- back door. They had assets in place already that we
- called it out, so we were able to see him, you know, toss a bag.
- The bag had, you know, weapons and things like that in it.
- And when he hopped the fence, he was headed probably maybe 50
- yards to a train track, which if he'd have made it to,
- would be extremely difficult
- to catch. But it just so happens that we were able to call it down,
- and immediately
- those assets from those undercover locations were able
- to spot him and get eyes on him and take him into custody without
- incident, plus recover valuable evidence.
