  1. [suspenseful music] In the middle of the night,
  2. a static line failure happened at one of the generating facilities at the
  3. substation.
  4. It fell across a three hundred and forty-five kV bus.
  5. This tripped out pretty much everything associated with that bus and also tripped
  6. out a generating unit. It was a danger at that point.
  7. Every time there is a major fault like that, there is a risk of failed equipment
  8. with significant downstream effects.
  9. This could mean a significant portion of the workforce would have to allocate a
  10. substantial amount of time and potentially millions of dollars.
  11. If an employee is in the vicinity of the equipment during a failure, the result
  12. could be a serious injury or a fatality.
  13. There are also risks of electrical shock hazards or arc flash.
  14. These are all things that may not allow somebody to go home at
  15. the end of their
  16. shift.
  17. When the drone was deployed, there was a clear view of the failure points of
  18. the
  19. initial static line. With this aerial view, it was clear
  20. that another static line
  21. that was adjacent to it was also on the brink of failure,
  22. which could have
  23. essentially caused the exact same problem that the first one did.
  24. With this information, key decisions were made to repair the static line before
  25. it
  26. failed, which resulted in avoided costs, saved man-hours, and the
  27. elimination of another forced
  28. outage.
