  2. One of our first really significant incidents
  3. happened to be an officer-involved shooting.
  4. Oklahoma City 911.
  5. Came in as a disturbance call.
  6. That guy keeps, like, walking, like-
  7. Are you having beef with someone up the road? You got any weapons?
  8. Can I pat you down real quick? [dog barks] Make sure you don't have any
  9. weapons.
  10. [dog barks] Here. [dog barks] Don't reach for
  11. nothing. [gunshots] Oh. [gunshots] Oh,
  12. shots fired. Shots fired. He's running
  13. down 21st.
  14. There's a exchange of gunfire.
  15. Suspect looks like he was hit.
  16. Two drones responded.
  17. 1074 says he ran in the backyard back here.
  18. All right, uh, George 36 is en route there with the drone.
  19. There's another drone out here as well, correct?
  20. You're tactically going to make different choices not knowing if the
  21. suspect is still armed or not.
  22. All right, he's in the backyard.
  23. He's laying down. He's on the far side.
  24. By the use of the drone, you're able to direct the officers to the
  25. suspect.
  26. This is his house. Far side, right here. He's right there.
  27. Okay.
  28. You're able to see that he's unarmed.
  29. Let me see your hands. Getting in close right now.
  30. I don't see anything in the hands. Hands look open.
  31. They're above his head right now. He's laying down.
  32. Keeping the officer safe and also keeping that suspect safe,
  33. getting him definitive medical care once he's in
  34. custody.

  36. The drones as a whole, especially for our department, has
  37. been a night and day difference.
  38. They are used daily in multiple divisions, in multiple
  39. shifts.
  40. My name's Dax Laporte. Been a police officer with Oklahoma City
  41. for
  42. approximately 26 and a half years now.
  43. Every tool's a piece to the puzzle on how do I keep the community safe.
  44. I'm Jason Bussert. I'm the captain over IT here at Oklahoma
  45. City Police
  46. Department.
  47. Being able to talk to the community and going,
  48. "This is what we're doing to help
  49. you all," it's putting the right people in the right situations with the right
  50. information so that we have better outcomes.
  51. Whenever we're getting them initially trained, you try and introduce them
  52. to as much as possible, and so they get classroom
  53. setting, a stick time setting to comfortably
  54. prepare
  55. them while out on patrol.
  56. We have people who need air support immediately.
  57. If someone's injured and they need help and we can't find them,
  58. seconds matter.
  59. It's an amplifier of the manpower that we have on the streets 'cause they
  60. know
  61. where the person is. They can see it as they arrive because we
  62. have live view, live
  63. streaming. Talking with the team, talking with the officers in the field,
  64. they
  65. went, "We really just want one in our hands."
  66. And that made sense to me.
  67. Oklahoma City's been fortunate enough to do the patrol-led deployment,
  68. where we've been able to put multiple cases in patrol cars out on the
  69. streets at any given time.
  70. We've been called here today for a suspect in the woods.
  71. Ran from officers.
  72. Gonna deploy the drone.
  73. My name is Sergeant Cameron Kyle. I'm a patrol officer with Springlake
  74. Division. Day-to-day agenda is patrol, respond to
  75. dangerous situations, and deploy a drone if needed.
  76. What's good about Skydio is the use of it is very easy.
  77. Let's stand clear, make sure everything's safe.
  78. Deploying the drone would be a little more officer safety just in case he's hiding
  79. behind a tree, behind some bushes, or up in a tree.
  80. Without using a drone, we would have the perimeter set up.
  81. An officer would go with K9, and that could take hours searching a field
  82. this size.
  83. This is quick, and it's another tool for the officers to
  84. use.
  85. I'm recording this whole incident.
  86. Yeah, you can zoom in pretty close.
  87. During the wintertime, this thing will pick up excellent.
  88. You'll see his footprints walking out to it. It's pretty cool.
  89. Is that him right there?
  90. All right, we got him.
  91. We got him.
  92. We got him. We can get K9.
  93. [intense music] Go straight west and you'll run into him.
  94. Oklahoma City Police Department K9 Unit. Come out now, you're going to be bit.
  95. When K9 starts walking, we'll stay with him. We're looking.
  96. If we see something ahead of him, we're gonna notify them so they know what
  97. to
  98. expect.
  99. I mean, right now we'd be radioing straight ahead.
  100. K9 unit is arriving on scene.
  101. Find him.
  102. Oh, oh, oh.
  103. [K9 growls] [body thuds]
  104. Oh, God.
  105. And he just bit him.
  106. Hold him, buddy. [K9 growling] Hold him. Billy, out.
  107. Heel.
  108. We'll normally trail them until they get back.
  109. After that, we come back and land, and it'll automatically
  110. upload to Skydio and Axon. Um, and then we just knock out a report
  111. of what we did.
  112. My goal for Oklahoma City is to have the technology
  113. working for the officers and not the officers working for
  114. technology.
  115. Everything in my ecosystem has to work together.
  116. We have to look at really what helps the community and what helps keep our
  117. officers safer.
  118. A lot of the technological advancements that
  119. we've made has been Captain Bussert, my direct captain,
  120. his ability to think outside the box.
  121. What can I do to the police department right now that is gonna leave
  122. it in a better position not when I leave, but five and 10
  123. years down the road after I've already left?
  124. We've done the drone in the trunk, and they've been incredibly effective.
  125. We've had so many success stories with this.
  126. To be able to tie that into DFR, Drones as a First Responder,
  127. having drones on top of buildings that can respond to a call without an
  128. officer. Now we've increased the availability for
  129. officers for
  130. situations that they really need to be hands-on.
  131. That's my vision for the next step. That's where we're headed.
  132. We have to look at does this help our officers? Does this help our community?
  133. This vision does.
