New York City expands drone program, seeing real results in keeping the community safer

  1. So today we are announcing that New York City is flying into the
  2. future to keep New Yorkers safe. There's been a lot of
  3. buzz, so let me be clear, drones are proven
  4. technology, and as I explained, the benefits are not
  5. theoretical. Uh, they are clearly part of our law
  6. enforcement apparatus now.
  7. All right, so we're looking at one of our Skydio
  8. drones.
  9. These are our, uh, one of our handheld drones that the, uh,
  10. department
  11. uses for, uh,
  12. the drone as first responders.
  13. We have multiple teams throughout the city, uh, multiple
  14. drone, uh,
  15. deputy commission of operation drone teams,
  16. officers have deployed throughout the
  17. city, uh, randomly. Two in Brooklyn, two in Staten Island.
  18. They're, they're all over. So when they respond to a job, like if,
  19. for example, the
  20. fire that happened in, uh, Prospect Park, these officers got the call,
  21. they immediately responded there.
  22. They launched the drone, where we were able to send that live feed,
  23. not only to the
  24. fire commissioner, but to the mayor, the park commissioner, the Commissioner
  25. Donovan, and the leadership team that you see here.
  26. So they were able to get a bird's-eye view and an aerial view of exactly what was
  27. going on inside of the park and how big this fire was, and
  28. obviously there was a multi-agency response.
  29. Now, let's just show, if you can look on the screen,
  30. you're seeing, look, look at
  31. that five K quality. Look at that picture.
  32. Can you imagine if you're a parent
  33. or a, a parent and you're walking in Central
  34. Park and you get separated from your
  35. child and you call nine one one? The drone as first
  36. responder can also assist in that search.
  37. We have not only officers on the ground looking for the child,
  38. but we have officers
  39. that, uh, that are looking, using this technology from an aerial view,
  40. looking for
  41. a missing child.
  42. Now, what you're seeing here is the, uh, drone in a box, our Xtendrox.
  43. These, these boxes, which you're gonna see,
  44. are gonna be on top of the commands.
  45. We have one in the Bronx. Uh, we have one in the seven seven one
  46. precinct.
  47. This is the DFR. This is what drone as first responder looks
  48. like.
  49. Launching drones autonomously on top of the
  50. precincts. For example,
  51. a nine one one call comes in for, let's say, person robbed,
  52. uh, assault in progress. The call's, the longitude and latitude gets
  53. routed to our DFR system. The officer, the pilot can then
  54. click on the actual call,
  55. and it can respond autonomously to that call.
  56. When it gets on station, they are providing an aerial and
  57. tactical view and giving the boots-on-the-ground officers
  58. play-by-play of what's going on. I recently, uh, watched a,
  59. uh, video from when there was a stabbing somewhere in, um,
  60. in Brooklyn, I think it
  61. was on Nostrand Avenue, where the drone as first responder got
  62. there first. They saw a person laying on the ground,
  63. and they
  64. saw the suspect running away from the scene.
  65. The suspect ran ten blocks.
  66. He heard the sirens coming, he heard the ambulance coming,
  67. he ran ten blocks, and
  68. he decided to hide in a store. The drone,
  69. the Skydio drone, was so high up in the air,
  70. about three hundred and fifty feet
  71. altitude, that this person didn't even know
  72. that he was being watched by the drone
  73. after he committed this ava-- uh,
  74. ava-- this type of assault. He walked into a bodega, took off
  75. his shirt. We watched him. The drones watched him take off his
  76. clothes
  77. and put it into his bag as he walked into the bodega, and when he walked back
  78. outside, he was met by uniformed police officers,
  79. where he was placed under arrest.
  80. Another most, uh, example that I like to use also is there
  81. was recently a home
  82. invasion in Queens,
  83. where three individuals decided to go take a family hostage while they-- the
  84. drone was launched because our air support was down.
  85. The drone watched, the cameras watched this whole thing take
  86. place, where they saw
  87. inside of the house that the peop- the family was being held against their
  88. will.
  89. They had their hands in the air.
  90. Police officers arrived on the scene and tried to start a dialogue with the
  91. suspects in there. They decided to jump out the back window.
  92. Little do they know, the thermal imaging on, uh,
  93. software on this
  94. camera got all three of them hopping out the window.
  95. They were app- they were able to apprehend two suspects
  96. quickly.
  97. One decided to run three blocks away to hide behind a shed, where the drone saw
  98. him hiding behind the shed with a thermal imaging camera and was safely able to
  99. take that individual into custody.
  100. This type of technology is helping us catch bad guys.
  101. We're gonna em- uh, embrace this technology,
  102. like I said before,
  103. to make, uh, to keep New York City the safest big city
  104. in America.
  105. Yes, it's working.
  106. Show it land back to the dock.
  107. Yeah. Can we have it land back into the dock?
  108. Yep. Now watch.
  109. Let's say that the, the, the drone has finished his mission, its
  110. mission. It's gonna return back to home base.
  111. As you can see, the docks are opening up.
  112. It's gonna land back into its, uh, its cradle point.
  113. It's gonna close, and it's going to charge,
  114. and it's gonna get ready for the next
  115. mission.
  116. Wanna land it? Mm.
  117. So once it, the, the lasers connect with the, uh,
  118. the drone, the, the actual drone,
  119. it will safely land back into its, uh, drone station.
  120. And this is what's happening throughout those five precincts that we said, uh,
  121. earlier today. The six seven, the seven, uh, seven five, the
  122. seven one, the four eight precinct, and now Central Park Precinct has
  123. officially come online.
  124. Look at that. Touchdown.
