FAQs about F10 Lightrunner
About F10 Lightrunner
What is F10 Lightrunner?
F10 Lightrunner is Skydio's autonomous, dock-based fixed-wing drone built for long-range, rapid-response missions. It flies up to 100 mph, reaches 30 miles out and stays airborne for up to two hours.
How is F10 Lightrunner different from Skydio X10?
Both are highly capable flying robots, but they serve different purposes. X10 is the choice for organizations whose missions are highly dense in geography, require significant concurrency and high availability. F10 is the choice for organizations whose missions require long reach, high-speed and extended endurance. While F10 operates at a higher, consistent altitude, X10 has extensive maneuverability for close-in inspections and can fly as low as 2 feet off the ground.
What are the ideal use cases for F10?
F10 Lightrunner is a fixed-wing aircraft built for long range, high speed and multi-hour endurance. In public safety, F10 is ideal for high-speed pursuits, long-duration overwatch, rural and suburban response, search and rescue, large perimeters, and coverage gaps where additional dock placement is impractical or inefficient. For critical infrastructure, F10 supports long-range patrols across multiple miles, rapid damage assessment after severe weather, and sustained monitoring during extended incidents.
How easy is F10 to fly?
F10 makes fixed-wing flight as simple as directing a mission from a web browser. The remote pilot selects where to go and what to observe in Remote Flight Deck; F10 handles the complex work: autonomously launching and landing from MegaDock via Robotic Takeoff and Landing (RTOL), navigating, and returning on its own. There's no handheld controller, runway, ground crew, or pilot at the launch site. The remote pilot remains in control of the mission and can redirect the aircraft or camera at any time.
How fast does the F10 fly?
Up to 100 mph. The airframe also holds category-2 hurricane wind tolerance while anchored in dock.
How long can the F10 stay in the air?
Up to two hours total mission time: about 90 minutes of flight paired with a 30-minute charge cycle.
What's the F10's operational range?
F10 covers approximately 1,200 square miles per mission profile, well beyond typical multirotor range.
What are the F10's wind and weather limits?
Operational flight is rated up to 28 mph (45 km/h) sustained wind.
How does an F10 mission work?
A pilot selects the mission in a Command, and the F10 autonomously.
Flight performance and capabilities
How fast does the F10 fly?
F10 flies at up to 100mph, with a 45mph cruise speed.
How long can the F10 stay in the air?
Up to two hours total mission time: about 90 minutes of flight paired with a 30-minute charge cycle.
What's the F10's operational range?
F10 has an operational range of 30 miles radius or a total coverage area of 2,800 square miles, which covers an area larger than 98% of U.S. counties.
What are the F10's wind and weather limits?
F10 is IP55 rated and can fly in light rain, dust, and wind gusts up to 27 mph (45 km/h).
What sensors does the F10 carry?
F10 Lightrunner Sensor Package includes a 64 MP narrow camera and a 48 MP telephoto zoom camera, plus a Teledyne FLIR Boson+ radiometric thermal sensor. See F10 tech specs for details.
How does the F10 stay connected, and what happens if it loses signal?
F10 has Connect Fusion+ built-in, which brings two integrated cellular connections that carry command, control, and video; Connect SL handles launch and recovery at MegaDock. Long-range flight requires cellular coverage across the operating area, which Skydio evaluates with you before deployment.
On loss of connectivity, F10 continues briefly to clear the gap, orbits at its last reliable connection point, then returns to MegaDock if it can't reconnect.
How does the F10 avoid obstacles?
Most autonomous drones avoid obstacles reactively: detect something close, then stop or steer around it. A fixed-wing aircraft at 100 mph can't stop, so fixed-wing platforms have traditionally stayed high and avoided obstacles by altitude alone. Foresight changes that: it continuously looks ahead along the route and re-plans around obstacles while there's still distance to maneuver, bringing Skydio Autonomy to fixed-wing flight. Pathfinder charts the route before F10 flies it—terrain, obstacles, geofences, airspace rules—and Foresight adapts that route in flight to what the aircraft actually detects. In addition, F10 uses onboard 360 navigation cameras and Skydio Autonomy to deliver forward obstacle avoidance in daylight conditions.
Compliance
Is F10 Lightrunner NDAA-compliant?
Yes. F10 is fully NDAA-compliant at launch. It is designed, assembled, and supported in the United States and meets federal sourcing requirements for government agencies and critical infrastructure operators.
What regulatory approvals are required to operate the F10?
No new pilot certificate is required to fly F10, but organizations need FAA approval for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations.
For public safety and government agencies operating under Part 91, many existing single-drone waivers can cover F10 without additional approval, provided the operation remains within the waiver’s existing conditions. Multi-drone approvals are make- and model-specific and will need to be updated to include F10.
Commercial and enterprise operators flying under Part 107 will need a new or amended waiver that includes F10. Skydio Regulatory Services are included with F10 packages to help customers navigate the approval process.
How does F10 maintain awareness of nearby aircraft?
The Skydio Airspace Assurance System (SAAS) receives ADS-B and other detect-and-avoid inputs to maintain traffic awareness and alerts the operator when it identifies a potential conflict. If a collision becomes imminent, SAAS automatically maneuvers F10 away from the risk. ADS-B covers participating aircraft only and doesn't replace the remote pilot's responsibilities.
