Brookhaven PD unlocks 30 second response times with the deployment of 8 new Docks
The city of Brookhaven was incorporated in 2012, and has embraced technology and made innovation a priority since day one. Chief Brandon Gurley shares that since expanding their DFR program, camera network, and gunshot detection capabilities, Brookhaven has seen its clearance rates by arrest for shoplifting increase by over 70%. They have also seen their crime rates decrease in every index crime and in every group A crime.
Since transitioning to a Dock-based DFR deployment model, the agency can reliably launch a drone to any call for service at the push of a button, without fear of losing connectivity. Seamlessly integrated with multiple software programs including Axon Fusus, Evidence.com, and Live 911, data is streamlined to one view to reduce cognitive load and get the drone on scene even faster.
Captain Abrem Ayana says that the key to achieving a 30-second response time is dock placement and quantity, not how fast the drone flies. “Technology can’t hold us back. In true DFR, the drone is always ready for the emergency. Our response time is under 60 seconds. So while you’re still typing the call into the CAD in another jurisdiction, we’ve already got the drone on the scene of the call. That’s DFR.”
- "The tech has to solve a problem, it can't create problems.
- For five years we used equipment that was not purpose built for the application
- ."
- "The Brookhaven Police Department will now be deploying eight of its new drones
- from
- launch pads just like this one on top of this 17-story building in Buckhead to
- get an extra
- set of eyes on the scene."
- "So back then, it was stressful.
- Nobody wants to be up here in the 90-degree summer Georgia day and that
- humidity.
- And nobody wants to be up here when it's 20 degrees."
- "So you bring up a canopy, a table, chairs, the internet, who set the drone up
- here.
- That drone would get out there and it would just frighten them to stop."
- "Or if it was hit the head."
- "It did."
- "It did not work."
- "The whole doc drone concept was a saving grace horse.
- One of the biggest stretch reliefs for us is now.
- This tech was built for this."
- "True DFR programs are centered around the readily available capability of a
- drone.
- Can you get a drone there right now just by a push of a button?"
- Brookhaven is a new city.
- It's a young city.
- It was incorporated in December of 2012.
- We have embraced technology.
- We have tried to be very innovative and forward thinking since the early days
- of starting
- this police department.
- Over the last year, year and a half, when we really grew out and expanded on
- our drone
- program and our camera network and our gunshot detection, our clearance rate by
- arrest for
- shoplifting, for example, is up well over 70 percent.
- Over the last year, we have seen our crime rate in every index crime and in
- every group
- A crime, every single category has decreased this year.
- "I never worked for an agency before but we had so much technology even at our
- disposal."
- You know, we're using multiple software programs.
- Aladdin 911, Skydio, our version of flight radar, Axon fuses.
- It helps that now it carries over the bad idea or report ID with it now.
- Pushes from here.
- So there, that's a huge difference.
- Trying to take all this and put it into one
- That's the kind of goal.
- It's fast.
- I can't believe I've put the minute eyes and I'll see it and then taking that
- data and
- pushing it to the officers.
- Those seconds are what changes from me, catching the guy or not catching the guy.
- So you're hearing it right there.
- That's Simma Lane Drive.
- Hey, man.
- Where is it?
- Simma's late.
- Hey, 3600 block, B4 highway.
- You're going to go south of the drone?
- I'm going to go find it and I'm going to send you over there.
- We're getting three of our eight docks installed today.
- Three are located here at the police department.
- We have two more just down the street at another city building.
- Two are going at a city park and then we're getting one singular dock placed up
- on the
- north end of the city park.
- So right now, the officer that said route to the shoplifting car, he's a route
- to.
- She right there was his Catherine Quercate 295.
- That's where she's at.
- Okay.
- Hello.
- And we're still going to beat her.
- The docks that they're setting up right now, would have been there already.
- It's less about how fast the drone is and more about dock place.
- If you can get enough displays to opt, you can have a 30 second response time.
- He's on drone three, she's on drone two.
- So you got two drones up, he's at a shoplifting incident, and then I can view
- the other one
- right now on ready link.
- So people called about this accident.
- Well, it looks like somebody's injured.
- Being able to click a button and just fly to the location is a game changer.
- The whole fusion thing, being in a 5G area all over our city, yeah, we don't
- see that there is
- ever an issue of connection.
- It made my job so much easier.
- Someone up is listening to us, so we really appreciate it.
- From the customer support side and the deployment side, the deployment team,
- it's been top notch.
- These just got delivered a couple of hours ago, and we have two docks in here
- right now,
- and probably will be flying by the end of the day.
- So I mean, I would say this top notch is hard to beat.
- All I want is for the work, just work.
- Work when we need it, have a minimum failure rate, and that's where the X10 and
- the dock made
- a difference for us.
- We still ask for a lot from Skydio.
- We're never going to be satisfied with where we are, but we're going to always
- ask for
- more.
- Because if not, we're going to call you out.
- Technology can't hold us back.
- In true DFR, the drone is always ready for the emergency.
- Our response time is under 60 seconds.
- So while you are still typing the call into the CAD in another jurisdiction, we
- 've already
- got the drone on the scene of the call, and that's the DFR.
