Drone helps save a life during a deadly hostage standoff in Florida
Escambia County Sheriff’s Office saved the life of a woman who was being held hostage after a 5 hour standoff with a convicted felon. The Sheriff’s Office deployed the Skydio X2 for overwatch during the standoff to provide information to officers on the ground, mitigating risk for the officers and the hostage. Eventually the suspect attempted to flee his hostage location and officers shot the suspect, freeing the hostage.

- The Escambia County Sheriff says one of his deputies eventsly- eventually shot the
- man after he made a threatening dre- gesture.
- WKRG News 5's Cody Long shows us what happened leading up to
- last night's deadly shooting.
- In this infrared drone video, you see SWAT team members
- on the left side with guns drawn. Outside the car on the right
- side, the sheriff says a man used a woman as a
- human
- shield, with a knife to her throat, as he tried to get in his
- car to leave.
- He threatened our deputies, he threatened the bondsman,
- he held a knife to the
- throat of a hostage, and he tried to get away.
- That man is identified as Ronnie Clark.
- Bail bondsmen from Bay Minette were here looking for Clark, a
- 58-time convicted felon who was wanted for failure to appear on
- a drug charge. He was inside a tent on Hilton Lane right
- off of Klondike Road.
- All this time, he held a woman against her will inside a
- tent that's on that
- property.
- Clark did not have a gun, just this object
- that from a distance deputies say looked like a gun.
- Sheriff Simmons says Clark made threats from his phone
- during the five-hour standoff.
- He also during this time made two phone calls or texts to people he knows,
- acquaintances, and said that he has a gun, and he said that he was going to shoot
- it out with deputies.
- As he left the tent and tried to escape in his car,
- the SWAT team moved
- in with a tactical vehicle, fired one shot into the car,
- killing Clark and injuring the woman.
- You play this type of stupid game, and you get what you get.
- If he had just obeyed, if he had just surrendered, given up,
- allowed her to go, if he'd had done that,
- he'd probably at the jail now, he'd be at the jail now trying on
- jumpsuits.
- The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating.
- The State Attorney's Office will determine if the use of deadly force was
