Miami Beach PD’s RTIC supports 400+ officers with DFR

Synopsis

When the Miami Beach Police Department launched its Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC) in 2014, it began with just 25 cameras and a single analyst working out of a cubicle. Today, that operation has evolved into a fully integrated intelligence hub that serves more than 400 sworn officers across one of the most dynamic cities in the country — now enhanced with a Drone as First Responder (DFR) program.

The RTIC was designed to act as a force multiplier.

“The mission of the Real Time Intelligence Center is to serve as a virtual partner for the officer in the field,” Lt. Raymond Diaz explains.

Instead of relying solely on radio traffic, officers now receive live intelligence as incidents unfold. Analysts monitor cameras, license plate readers, and incoming calls for service — providing context before officers arrive and maintaining visibility throughout the response.

The addition of DFR extends that visibility into the air.

During one incident, a stolen vehicle entered Miami Beach through the city’s north end. RTIC analysts quickly identified the vehicle using license plate reader data and citywide cameras, narrowing its location to a defined area. Rather than sending officers in without a clear picture of the scene, the team deployed DFR to establish overhead awareness.

From above, analysts were able to eliminate blind spots around the vehicle and relay positioning details to responding units. That real-time information allowed patrol officers to coordinate their approach, determine the safest apprehension strategy, and take the suspect into custody.

The arrest was completed without injury.

For a department without a traditional aviation unit, DFR provides immediate aerial capability that enhances decision-making and reduces uncertainty during high-risk calls. Officers consistently cite it as one of the most impactful safety enhancements within the RTIC — delivering critical information before contact is ever made.

Miami Beach PD’s continued investment in its RTIC and Drone as First Responder program reflects a deliberate strategy: equip officers with better intelligence, improve coordination in the field, and drive safer outcomes for the community.
