West Palm Beach sets new standard with DFR innovation
Synopsis
In July 2024, the West Palm Beach Police Department launched its Skydio Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, closely integrated with Axon Air, Fusus, and Axon Body Cameras. The program quickly overcame early challenges to establish a strong operational model that delivers real-time intelligence to officers in the field.
Since its launch, WPBPD has conducted more than 1,900 flights, with drones arriving first on scene in over half of calls. Pilots have provided critical support by tracking fleeing suspects, locating missing persons, identifying gunshot victims, and assisting SWAT operations—often before ground units arrive. The department also secured advanced FAA waivers to operate near Palm Beach International Airport and during presidential visits, supporting both patrol and federal partners. Looking ahead, WPBPD is expanding to 24/7 operations with docking stations, Dedrone radar, and RTK-enabled 3D mapping, further solidifying its role as a leader in DFR innovation and community safety.
