About the Role

We are looking for a Technical Writer / Content Developer to join our team and own the development of high-quality documentation for our safety-critical, industrial-grade products. This role is ideal for a seasoned technical writer with experience in defense, aerospace, or industrial OEM environments who is looking to expand into leadership and content strategy.

This individual will work cross-functionally with Engineering, Product Management, Curriculum Development, and Multimedia teams to transform complex technical concepts into user-friendly documentation, reference guides, and other derivative materials. The ideal candidate is self-directed, thrives in fast-paced environments, and is passionate about developing content that enables safe and effective product use in mission-critical environments.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Develop, maintain, and publish technical documentation including user manuals, installation guides, safety instructions, product specifications, and white papers.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, curriculum designers, and multimedia teams to gather requirements and translate technical content into accessible formats.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of structured content for a variety of users, including operators, technicians, and training staff.
  • Ensure documentation meets industrial and regulatory compliance standards (e.g., FAA, OSHA, NFPA, NIST, IEEE, CJIS).
  • Lead the development of 2D/3D visuals and graphics in support of technical documentation and training content.
  • Maintain document control protocols and version tracking in accordance with best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Represent the technical writing function in stakeholder meetings and communicate effectively with senior leaders and cross-functional partners.
  • Contribute to the evolution of internal documentation processes and tools with a future path toward managing a growing content team.

What makes you a good fit:

  • 3–6 years of experience (5+ preferred) in technical writing, particularly in safety-critical, industrial, or defense-focused environments.
  • Demonstrated experience working with technical teams to convert PRDs, user stories, and technical specs into end-user documentation.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing work in industrial or OEM settings with complex systems.
  • Ability to author across multiple content types, including manuals, reference guides, white papers, 2D/3D visual content, and interactive training assets.
  • Deep understanding of documentation control processes and content lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with industrial regulations and standards including FAA, OSHA, NFPA, IEEE, ASCE, NIST, CJIS, and others.
  • Professional conduct and experience working with cross-functional stakeholders, including executives.
  • Comfortable operating independently and owning end-to-end documentation projects.
  • Bonus: Experience with XML/DITA, content management systems, and tools like MadCap Flare, FrameMaker, SolidWorks Composer, or similar.
  • Hybrid Work Model: 3 Days in Office based out of our HQ in San Mateo Ca

Compensation: At Skydio, our compensation packages for regular, full-time employees include competitive base salaries, equity in the form of stock options, and comprehensive benefits packages. Compensation will vary based on factors, including skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, and experience. Relocation assistance may also be provided for eligible roles. The annual base salary range for this position is $113,000 - $161,000*. Fundamentally, we believe that equity is the key to long-term financial growth, and we ensure all regular, full-time employees have the opportunity to significantly benefit from the company's success. Regular, full-time employees are eligible to enroll in the Company’s group health insurance plans.
