Drone helps BCSO avert tragedy in child firearm incident

Synopsis

In a high-risk incident on February 16, 2025, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call involving two children—just 7 and 9 years old—armed with a loaded firearm. At one point, one of the children pulled the trigger, but the weapon jammed.

Using the Skydio X10 drone as part of their Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, deputies were able to assess the scene from a safe distance and develop a tactical approach without escalating the situation. Deputies were able to monitor the situation in real time, giving them the situational awareness they needed to secure the area and prevent what could have become a deadly force encounter.

In a statement, BCSO credited its drone program, training, and Behavioral Health Unit as key factors in resolving the incident safely. The department emphasized the importance of having the right tools and preparation in place to manage high-stakes, complex events—especially those involving vulnerable individuals.
