SFPD uses drones to quickly solve retail crimes from RTIC

Synopsis

In a rare look inside San Francisco’s Real-Time Investigation Center (RTIC), police share how they used drones to arrest suspects minutes after a high-end retail theft at Union Square’s Burberry store.

As soon as the theft was reported, RTIC investigators retrieved surveillance footage and pushed suspect descriptions to patrol officers in real time. A Drone as First Responder (DFR) was launched from a dock, successfully tracking two of the three suspects—even after they changed clothing. Within minutes of the reported theft, officers made arrests and recovered most of the stolen merchandise, valued at over $15,000.

SFPD credits this quick response and technological coordination with making cases stronger for prosecution. Last year alone, RTIC-supported tools—including drones—contributed to 500 felony arrests.

City officials and local business owners say the investment in real-time tools is helping restore safety and vibrancy to the area without compromising privacy. The investigation is ongoing, with one suspect still outstanding
