3D Model

Semi-Conductor Facility

In the midst of a global chip shortage, semiconductor facilities need to be constructed more efficiently than ever, and their job sites are also under greater scrutiny than ever. This 3D model, courtesy of Dean Miller at Sundt Construction, is of a water crystallizer cooling tower, which cools superheated water down to temperatures around the boiling point. Any leaks in the system are extremely dangerous, and can expose workers to dangerous temperatures. Inspection by ground-based methods requires workers to enter a dangerous environment at high altitude, with high sun exposure. Inspection with manual drones is impossible, because manual drones cannot fly up close to such a large metallic structure without losing their compass readings.

With 3D Scan, a Skydio can autonomously scan the water crystallizer cooling tower and provide a detailed 3D reconstruction to help inspectors detect even the smallest problem, while also opening up doors for digital twins and virtualized asset bases. This model’s photos were taken with 3D Scan on a Skydio 2, and the reconstruction was performed using Bentley ContextCapture.

This model was captured autonomously by Skydio 3D Scan. 3D Scan is a first-of-its-kind adaptive scanning software built on top of Skydio Autonomy. It allows the drone to automate data capture for generating 3D models with comprehensive coverage and ultra-high resolution, so that crews can perform higher quality scans in less time and with minimal pilot training.
