About the role

Skydio is looking for an enthusiastic Flight Test Operator (FTO) to help validate and advance the next generation of Skydio products. As a leader in developing cutting-edge aerial platforms and the software that powers them, Skydio offers an exciting environment for hands-on work with all our products. In this role, you will collaborate closely with various teams across the organization, providing support across multiple projects on the flight test team. This is a unique opportunity to play an essential role in shaping Skydio’s innovative products.

Employment Type: This will be a fixed term, 6-Month contract.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate quadcopters, multi-rotors, and fixed-wing drones in a variety of field environments to support engineering testing and data collection
  • Capture, analyze, and manage high-quality flight data, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and thorough documentation across all flights.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering and development teams to refine data collection methods, optimize workflows, and improve overall drone performance and reliability.
  • Identify and troubleshoot in-flight or system issues, providing clear feedback and recommendations through detailed test reports and organized data summaries.
  • Participate in flight planning, risk assessments, and equipment maintenance to keep all systems flight-ready.
Qualifications
  • This role is based in the Bay Area, CA, with the expectation of commuting to both HQ and Half Moon Bay as needed.
  • Proven experience operating drones, ideally in test or R&D environments, with a strong understanding of flight dynamics, drone systems, and data acquisition workflows.
  • Detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable troubleshooting both in the field and in collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-driven environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or a related engineering field is preferred but not required. Relevant certifications or training in drone operation and safety protocols are highly valued.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience working with drone flight control software and hardware, along with strong troubleshooting and maintenance skills, will help you keep systems running smoothly and flight-ready at all times.
  • You bring hands-on experience with flight test instrumentation, telemetry systems, and data analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with FAA regulations and UAS operational requirements helps you plan and execute missions safely and effectively.

Compensation Range: This is a fixed term position with a limited duration as outlined in the job description. The hourly wage range for this position is $40-$60 per hour. Compensation will vary based on factors, including skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, geographic location and experience. Fixed Term employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s group health insurance plans after fulfilling tenure and waiting period requirements, subject to the terms and conditions of the plans.
